Costs of Pregnancy much reduced by Vitamin D

Includes number needed to treat

4,000 IU is barely enough - some women need a lot more

Reasons to have especially low levels of Vitamin D
Dark skin, Diabetes, Gut, (Multiple Sclerosis, Obesity, recent pregnancy, twins, concealing clothing, allergic to the sun. avoid the sun for other reasons

As a result of huge decline in vitamin D levels in past 40 years
< 7% of women now have sufficient vitamin D

Few whites, Fewer Hispanics, and No Blacks have > 40 ng of Vitamin D

A clinical trial in hospitals is giving 500 pregnant woman vitamin D to substantially reduce premature births
Note: have gone-beyond Random Clinical Trials, and trials are now giving good level of vitamin D to all pregnant women

Over $30 million to HMO which gives vitamin D during 10,000 pregnancies

Increased Vitamin D greatly increases healthy pregnancies in many ways
VitaminDWiki wants to promote increasing vitamin D during pregnancy
It appears that Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) have the most to gain
HMOs get the same income independant medical needs of the client

  • Only considering reduced Premature Births and C-section
  • Premature births have been proven to be cut in half when women increased their vitamin D levels > 40 ng
Note: premature birth rate ~ 15%
  • C-Section expected to also be reduced by at least half if women have > 40 ng of Vitamin D
    Note c-section rate ~ 30%

VitaminDWiki proposes a clinical trial with 10,000 pregnant women in an HMO

  • Women would be given free vitamin D tests and supplements
  • Cost of trial $4 million (assuming $400 per woman)
       Note: VITAL trial costs $200/person/year
  • Estimate 500 fewer premature births
  • Estimate 1,000 fewer C-sections

HMOs have a fixed annual income per person, independent of health (of pregnancies, etc)

  • Estimated cost savings to HMO of vitamin D resulting in healthier pregnancies = $47 million

Proposed source of $4 Milllion for the clinical trial

  • Investors who would be given 2 X return on their investment (from the HMO)
$12 million given to investors (Each $400 invested ==> $1200 in return)
The remaining $35 million would be net profit to the HMO
